At the 2024 Regeneron Westchester Science and Engineering Fair, two Iona Prep students stood out for their exceptional work. Senior Aidan Gerber won the Behavioral Science Department Award for his project that involved developing an algorithm using Python to conduct keyword frequency analysis and Latent Dirichlet Allocation to identify meaningful topics for discussion under the hashtag #sustainability on Twitter. His findings were published by Cambridge University Press in February. Meanwhile, junior Mateo Del Rio Lance also received a division award for his project that focused on improving the rate of machine learning by developing three convolutional neural networks (CNNs) that can screen for tumors in brain scans.

The Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair (VESEF) aims to inspire students to pursue hands-on scientific research by providing them with a platform to present their work. As one of the top 20 projects from the fair, Aidan Gerber and Matteo Del Rio Lance’s innovative projects have not only set an example for others but have also contributed significantly to the future of science and technology.
