Akai Pro recently announced the release of its MPC Stems technology, which allows producers to separate different musical elements in a mix such as bass, drums and vocals. This technology is now integrated into the company’s MPC Desktop software, promising a new era of sampling and precision for music producers and beatmakers.

MPC Stems are powered by zPlane’s de-stem engine, which promises superior sound quality and minimal artifacts. Once separated, stems can be assigned to pads within the MPC software. Producers can assign sample cuts to different pads and isolate specific parts of the original track. The workflow is simple – just select the Create Stems option and select the layers you want to extract. Volume, slope, pan levels for each stem can be adjusted individually or together for all four layers. Audio can also be cut on an individual or global basis.

Currently, MPC Stems only work in the desktop version of MPC software and are fully supported when used with the MPC Live Series, MPC One, MPC One +, MPC X, MPC Xse, MPC Key 61, MPC Key 37 or MPC Studio Mk2 in controller. To use stems in stand-alone mode, they must be created in desktop software and then opened in stand-alone hardware using a saved project. A timeline for full stand-alone support has not yet been announced.

Unfortunately, the MPC Stems update is not free for existing MPC software users and costs a one-time payment of $10. This update can be purchased exclusively through the MPC Store and requires the installation of software/firmware update 2.14.
