Amazon is cutting hundreds of jobs in its cloud division, according to internal emails obtained by BI. This news comes after the company recently eliminated around 160 advertising roles and thousands of roles in 2023.

The new cuts will primarily affect Amazon Web Services (AVS) employees, particularly the sales, marketing and global services teams within the company. Matt Garman, senior vice president of sales and marketing at AVS, confirmed the layoffs in an email. The decision to reduce roles was made in order to streamline the organization and focus on strategic areas that will have the most significant impact.

An AVS spokesperson confirmed the layoffs, stressing that the decisions were difficult but necessary for the company to continue investing in innovation for its customers. The affected employees will be supported during their transition to new roles.

This news comes on the heels of reports of layoffs in Amazon’s technology team, Just Walk Out. The layoffs are part of Amazon’s ongoing cost-cutting strategy, which has also included job cuts in its advertising, Prime Video and healthcare units. Last year, Amazon placed several employees on performance improvement plans as part of its restructuring efforts.

Overall, these job cuts reflect Amazon’s efforts to optimize resources and focus on key areas for growth and innovation. While challenging, these decisions are intended to ensure Amazon’s long-term success and sustainability in the competitive technology industry.
