Australian James Willett and Penny Smith Win Gold and Silver in Trap Shooting at 2024 ISSF World Cup

In Baku, Azerbaijan, the 2024 ISSF World Cup saw a fierce competition in trap shooting. On Sunday, Australian shooter James Willett emerged victorious in the men’s event and won the gold medal. Willett, who had two previous Olympic appearances and a gold medal at world championships before this year’s tournament, initially finished fifth in qualifying with a score of 121. Despite starting slow in the medal round, Willett produced an incredible performance and claimed the top spot on the podium with a final score of 46 out of 30 shots.

On the other hand, Penny Smith from Australia won silver in women’s trap shooting at Baku’s World Cup. Smith began her campaign by winning first place in qualifiers with an impressive score of 116 points. However, she faced a setback during the sixth series when she hit only two out of five shots, allowing Lebanon’s Basil Ray to take over first place. Ray ended up winning gold with a final score of 44 points while Smith finished with silver at 40 points. Italy’s Erica Sessa secured bronze with a score of 34 points. The silver medal added to Smith’s impressive ISSF World Cup record which now includes six gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals.
