Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced that his government will make an additional contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRVA) to ensure that it continues to function and provide assistance to the people of Gaza. Lula made the announcement Thursday night during a dinner with Arab ambassadors, calling on the international community to maintain and strengthen its contribution to the agency.

In response to recent allegations of UNRVA officials’ ties to Hamas, many countries have suspended funding to the organization. The decision comes after reports that 12 of its employees are linked to Hamas and could be involved in the October 7 attacks on Israel. In a published presidential speech, Lula said: “The recent allegations against UNRVA officials must be properly investigated, but they cannot paralyze it.”

Lula condemned Hamas’ “acts of terror” while also condemning Israel’s “disproportionate reaction”. He stressed the need to put an end to the humanitarian disaster that has affected more than two million Palestinians living in Gaza.

The Brazilian leader called for an end to collective punishment and urged the international community to continue supporting UNRVA.
