A team from the Brain Research Center at the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) is dedicated to improving the quality of life of minors diagnosed with autism. Led by neurobiology specialist Anlleli Grizzet Gutierrez Rodriguez, the team focuses on using therapies and enriched environments before considering pharmaceutical intervention.

Autism spectrum disorder is not a disease that can be cured with medication. People with autism have a unique brain architecture characterized by an excess of neural connections in some areas and a reduction in others. The goal of the UV team is to help rewire the brain’s connections to resemble those of neurotypical individuals through therapies and environmental enrichment.

The team has developed innovative tools such as the Reading-Writing in Autism (LEA) web application, which helps stimulate reading and writing skills in children with autism. The application has been shown to be effective in improving the learning and communication skills of children without intellectual disabilities. Additionally, the team uses tools such as a robotic arm and musical stimulation with Mozart compositions to engage children with autism and improve their learning and behavior. By providing controlled stimulation and an enriched environment, the team aims to increase attention span, reduce anxiety levels, and improve social interactions in children with autism.

With ongoing research and collaboration with institutions such as the Xalapa Institute of Technology, the UV team continues to explore new ways to support children with autism and improve their quality of life. Through a combination of therapies, enriched environments, and innovative tools, the team is making strides in helping children with autism reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives.
