Reggie Winston has always had a unique approach to interacting with his clients, and now he’s taking it to the next level when it comes to their health. Zinfindale Smith, a customer, mentioned that over the years visiting Bar Bear Shop he learned the importance of seeing a doctor and asking questions. The store recently hosted a men’s health and wellness fair, offering services such as blood pressure readings, STD screenings, and mental health screenings.

Winston’s nonprofit, Grooming Resources and Opportunities, along with other community partners, are focused on addressing physical and mental health disparities in black and brown communities, using the barbershop as a platform for intervention. The barbershop setting provides a safe space for open and honest conversations, with the aim of breaking down gender stereotypes and encouraging men to share their feelings.

Clinical mental health counselor Dr Rodney Harris pointed out that providing services such as blood pressure screening can also help address mental health issues. Parents like Benetta Thai emphasized the importance of boys feeling good about themselves, both through mental health support and a new haircut. The barbershop hopes to continue offering events like the Men’s Health and Wellness Fair to promote positive health outcomes in the community.
