In a meeting held in Washington on March 20, 2024, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) discussed potential areas of cooperation aimed at improving human resources for health (HRH) in the Americas region. The goal of the meeting was to exchange ideas based on the priorities of cooperation of both institutions in this area and to identify potential areas for collaboration.

Sebastian Bauhhoff, Chief Health Economist of IADB’s Social Sector Unit, presented an overview of their HRH workload and projects related to training and competence, career paths and the workplace, recruitment, retention and productivity improvement of HRH. Technical cooperation discussions focused on supporting countries in their HRH planning using tools such as health labor market analysis, identification of necessary competencies for health workers to address emergencies and climate change impacts, HRH migration and mobility, and development of information systems for HRH.

Benjamin Puertas, Head of the Human Resources for Health Unit of PAHO, introduced his organization’s Health Workforce Policy 2030 which aims to strengthen human resources for health in order to achieve resilient health systems. He also highlighted PAHO’s priority areas including HRH information systems, migration and mobility of healthcare workers interprofessional teams, transformation of healthcare workers education and expanding roles of nurses.

Both organizations have expressed a strong desire to establish more concrete collaborations and engage in detailed regional policy dialogue with countries in the Americas to strengthen the health workforce. This cooperation aims to improve capacity and efficiency of the health workforce in region.
