Despite popular belief that cancer is a disease that primarily affects older people, statistics reveal that young people are also at risk. In fact, the incidence of cancer among those aged 20 to 44 has increased by about 80%, according to global studies. This increase in diagnoses was found between 1990 and 2019, with common types of cancer among young people including testicular cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, malignant melanoma, breast cancer, and thyroid cancer.

To prevent this disease from taking hold in their lives, it’s important for young people to maintain a healthy lifestyle by avoiding smoking and second-hand smoke, following a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, limiting alcohol consumption and maintaining a healthy weight. Safe sun exposure should also be taken seriously.

It’s crucial for young people to be aware of the early signs of cancer so they can seek medical attention promptly. Symptoms such as unexplained pain or fatigue should not be ignored or dismissed as mere stress or anxiety; rather they should be taken seriously as potential warning signs of a serious health condition. Lumps or swelling on any part of the body, fever, skin changes or difficulty swallowing are other symptoms that should not be overlooked.

Fortunately, there are organizations like the Cancer Society that offer support services for young people facing cancer. These include support groups where individuals can connect with others who have gone through similar experiences; workshops where they can learn more about managing their illness; counseling services where they can talk to professional therapists; and information resources where they can find answers to their questions and concerns. To access these services or learn more about how the Cancer Society can help them during their journey towards recovery
