Celebrating 50 Years of the Volkswagen Golf: A Model that Time has Proven to be a winner!

To commemorate its 50th anniversary, Volkswagen is celebrating the Golf on Friday. Since its inception in 1974, over 37 million units of this iconic car have been sold worldwide. With an average of 2,000 people choosing a new Golf every day, it’s clear that this model has stood the test of time.

The production of the Golf began on March 29, 1974, as a replacement for the Beetle. Today, it continues to be produced at Volkswagen’s historic headquarters in Wolfsburg, as well as at other production sites in Germany and seven other countries. To mark the occasion, a special exhibition is opening in Wolfsburg that will showcase the Golf’s fifty years of existence.

Over the years, eight generations of the Golf have been presented, with the latest being the Golf 8 introduced in 2019. This model is available as a plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range of 100 kilometers. It also features voice control and an automated AI-based conversation partner.

In terms of sales, the Golf was Volkswagen’s best-selling model in Germany in 2023, with 81,000 cars sold according to Statista. Additionally, almost a fifth of the cars registered in Germany last year were Golfs reported by the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA). The success story of this model continues to shine brightly into its fifth decade on the road.
