Recently, Charter Healthcare, a hospital and home health care provider owned by Pharos Capital, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy without any public disclosure. The bankruptcy request was filed in federal district court in Delaware in late January according to documents obtained by Hospice News. Records show that Chapter 7 filings have been made for Charter locations in at least eight states across the California-based company’s footprint. Unfortunately, Charter’s website is no longer available.

At the time of the bankruptcy filing in February 2023, Charter served nearly 13,000 patients through various brands such as hospice, home health, complex care management and palliative care services. Chapter 7 liquidation is a process available to individuals or businesses that are unable to pay their debts on a regular basis or decide to go out of business. A court-appointed trustee manages the conversion of assets into cash for distribution among creditors. According to court filings, Charter’s total liabilities to creditors total nearly $37 million.

Pharos Capital did not respond to inquiries from Hospice News and Charter’s attorney listed in court documents also did not respond. It is worth noting that Cheryl Lovell, who assumed her position as CEO at Charter early last year according to her LinkedIn page, is no longer affiliated with the company since January despite the bankruptcy filing. Despite this unfortunate news, Charter has been actively acquiring hospice and home health companies since 2021 including The Providence Hospice and The Providence Home Health Services Inc., both located in Texas for an undisclosed amount.
