In recent years, wide receiver Chase Claypool has been on a downward spiral with his football career. Despite being a second-round pick of the Steelers in 2020 and having a promising rookie season with 11 total touchdowns and 873 receiving yards, his performance declined in the following seasons.

During his third season with the Steelers, Claypool was traded to the Bears in exchange for a second-round pick. However, due to manipulation by Miami, this pick ended up being the 32nd overall pick in the draft. The Bears later traded Claypool during the 2023 season in exchange for sixth and seventh round picks in 2025. But his performance with the Dolphins was limited to just four catches for 26 yards in nine regular season games.

As a result of his poor performance over the past two seasons, Claypool’s future in pro football is uncertain. He is currently a free agent and has not signed with any team during this current signing period. However, the CFL has taken notice of Claypool’s potential availability and has added him to their exclusive negotiation list.

While it is not certain that Claypool will join the Roughriders, if he decides to play in Canada, they will have the first opportunity to sign him. In his rookie season, Claypool scored 11 total touchdowns and gained 873 receiving yards and followed this up with an additional 860 yards in his second season with the Steelers before being traded away from them.
