The Centers for Disease Control has reported a sharp increase in cases of influenza, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in recent weeks. This has caused health officials to become increasingly concerned about the possibility of a triple epidemic. Emergency services across the country are preparing for this scenario as they brace for a surge in cases.
According to Dr. Braunstein, a physician, certain age groups and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions are more susceptible to severe cases and even death from the three diseases. “For those who are the youngest, they are the oldest,” he said. For those with underlying conditions, a flu infection can be especially deadly, he added.
Despite hospitalizations due to the flu being lower than this time last year, there was still an increase present in southern states. Additionally, many veterans are at risk of losing their homes after the COVID-19 mortgage relief program ends.
