In an effort to boost the sports tourism industry in Delaware, the Delaware Office of Tourism has established the Delaware Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund. This fund was made possible by the FY 24 Bond Act and will provide financial support to sports facilities that host events, tournaments, and championships throughout the year. The fund aims to bring visitors from out of state and create economic impact at both the state and local level.

Delaware Office of Tourism Director Jessica Welch explains that the fund is designed to support new or existing sports facilities that host events that bring people in hotel rooms and create a significant economic impact. She further notes that weekend events during the summer are particularly beneficial as they bring in a lot of money for the state and create a reputation for the facility they host.

The Delaware Office of Tourism recently hosted several high-profile sporting events, including the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Tournament, the 2022 PGA BMW Championship, the MEAC Volleyball Championship, and a host of regional high school and youth sporting events. The plan is to use this fund to help support a number of different facilities in order to continue attracting visitors to Delaware.

Welch emphasizes that weekend events during the summer bring in a lot of money for the state because they are held consistently and create a reputation for the facility they host. Officials expect this fund to help attract more visitors and continue to shine a light on why people should visit Delaware.

The Delaware Office of Tourism will hold two informational webinars later this month for potential applicants to learn more about how to apply for funding from this new initiative.
