Despite Predictions of a Rightward Shift, CDU Leadership Remains Centrist at Conference

CDU leader Friedrich Merz delivered a speech in support of the state at the start of the party’s conference in Berlin. Despite fears and predictions of a shift to the right, it did not materialize. The theme of the conference was “Together we win the future”, emphasizing the readiness of the party for the responsibility of the government at the federal level.

Merz’s speech covered a variety of topics typical of CDU party conferences, including party history, Christian values, local political successes and international crises. He presented himself as a statesman advocating for the political center in Germany. Mertz criticized the current ruling coalition and reiterated the CDU’s commitment to freedom and responsibility in politics.

He stressed the importance of unity between the CDU and CSU and stressed the need for a strong welfare state supported by prosperity from maintaining Germany’s industrial position. Mertz also addressed security issues, particularly regarding armed forces and international threats such as war in Ukraine. He criticized parties like AfD for undermining European values with Russian support.

Mertz did not directly mention left-wing parties in his speech, implying a willingness to work with them under certain conditions. The party confirmed Merz in office with nearly 90% support from delegates, signaling a positive outcome. However, real tests will come with upcoming state elections in eastern Germany which will determine future direction of party.

The conference was attended by delegates who had already left before premier praised Merz’s speech, highlighting its length which lasted almost an hour and half without giving opponents any room to attack.

In conclusion, Friedrich Merz delivered a strong speech that emphasized unity between CDU and CSU while addressing various issues such as welfare state, security issues and criticism against left-wing parties that undermine European values. The positive outcome confirms his leadership role within CDU party but future challenges lie ahead with upcoming state elections which will determine direction of party’s future path forward.
