In February, factory orders rose by 1.4%, beating economists’ expectations for a 1% increase. This growth was primarily driven by increased orders for durable goods and transportation equipment, which had not risen in two months. As a result, new orders for manufactured goods reached $576.8 billion in February. Additionally, total shipments rose 1.4% in the quarter, reversing a two-month losing streak. These positive indicators suggest that US manufacturing may be on the rise, following an expansion in the sector as shown by the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) manufacturing index.

In another report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the number of job openings rose to 8.8 million in February, up from a revised 8.7 million in January. This growth was in line with forecasters’ expectations and meant that there were 1.4 job openings for every unemployed worker, indicating a healthy labor market. Moreover, the number of people who left their jobs increased slightly to 3.5 million while the number of layoffs also rose to 1.7 million.

This trend suggests that workers may have gained some bargaining power as higher quit rates may indicate that people are leaving for better pay and working conditions.

Despite recent interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve to fight inflation, these rate increases have affected borrowing costs but have not yet significantly changed labor market dynamics.

Workers continue to have employment opportunities and are showing signs of improved bargaining power which is a positive indicator of the overall health of the economy.

Overall, both manufacturing and labor market data point towards a potentially resilient economic recovery after being hit hard by inflationary pressures last year
