In 2024, the theme for World Tuberculosis Day is “Yes! We can end TB.” This annual event, held on March 24, aims to raise awareness about the continued prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) and the importance of fighting it together. The Santa Barbara County Department of Public Health recognizes this day as a constant reminder that we must work together to eliminate TB.

TB is a preventable and treatable infectious disease that can be transmitted through the air. Most cases come from the progression of latent TB infection (LTBI) to active TB. LTBI is a condition in which there is a small amount of TB bacteria suppressed by the immune system, unable to transmit TB to others. Without treatment for LTBI, the bacteria can multiply and develop into active tuberculosis.

Dr. Henning Ansorg, public health officer and TB controller in Santa Barbara County, emphasizes that treating LTBI before it progresses to active TB is key in preventing new cases of TB. He encourages community members to feel comfortable asking their doctors for LTBI testing as part of their overall healthcare strategy.

In 2022, Santa Barbara County had an incidence rate of tuberculosis (4.3 cases per 100,000) higher than the national average in the United States (2.5 cases per 100,000). However, the district continues to work with local clinics, hospitals and organizations to raise awareness about TB risk factors, testing options and treatment options as crucial steps in identifying those at risk and preventing active disease outbreaks.

The Santa Barbara County Department of Public Health remains committed to ending tuberculosis once and for all. They encourage everyone in the medical community and general public to join their efforts towards eliminating this infectious disease from our world once and for all.
