Juan Vicente Perez Mora, a Venezuelan man known as the oldest living person in the world by Guinness World Records, has passed away just weeks before his 115th birthday. On February 4, 2022, Guinness awarded him this distinction after he had been alive for 112 years and 253 days following the death of the previous record holder, Saturnino de le Fuento GarcĂa. Mr. Perez attributed his longevity to a daily routine of hard work, resting during holidays, going to bed early, a glass of aguardiente every day, his faith in God and always carrying Him in his heart.

Perez was the father of 11 children, 41 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. He started farming at the age of five alongside his father and brothers to harvest sugar cane and coffee. Despite his agricultural work, he also served as sheriff, settling land and family disputes. Perez lived through significant historical events such as both world wars, the invention of television and the first moon landing. In addition to these milestones, he survived COVID-19 in 2020.

Gov. Freddy Bernal expressed his sadness at Perez’s death on social media while describing him as a humble and hardworking man who was passionate about family and tradition. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro paid tribute to Perez on social media expressing condolences to the family and people of El Cobra in Tachira state while describing Maureen’s departure as a transition into eternity at the age of 114.
