Exploring the Science Behind Football and Soccer: Devon SportsLab Takes to Kingfisher Elementary Schools

Oklahoma State University football and soccer players recently visited Kingfisher to teach students about the science behind these sports as part of Devon SportsLab’s community events. Devon SportsLab is an interactive workshop that aims to teach STEM concepts through sports, in partnership with Devon Energy, Engage Learning, the University of Oklahoma, OSU and the University of Tulsa.

Tangi Smith, community relations supervisor at Devon Energy, explained that the goal of the program is to show students how STEM is involved in many aspects of their daily lives. By using sport as a learning tool, Devon SportsLab hopes to inspire students to consider pursuing STEM-related careers in the future.

The event was highly anticipated by Kingfisher Elementary Principal Erin Michael and her students who were eager to interact with their favorite athletes and were grateful to Devon for making this experience possible at Kingfisher. During the event, OSU student-athletes led interactive drills to demonstrate the science behind passing, ball control and dribbling technique. Among the football players present were Rashod Owens, Obi Ezeigbo, Lyric Rawls and Justin Kirkland, while football players Xcaret Pineda, Eli Geoffroy, Carolyn Deal and Gracie Bindboitel.

Typically, Devon SportsLab events are held before college athletic events or as half-day clinics on campus but this event was part of a series of community clinics held across the state. To learn more about Devon SportsLab visit their website at devonsportslab.com
