According to a recent podcast on the barometer results, James Mintert, director of the Center for Commercial Agriculture, noted that while the overall index appears to be in a holding pattern, there are some interesting trends when future expectations are compared to current conditions. He pointed out that the slight increase in the barometer was fueled by increased optimism about the future. While the index of future expectations increased by 5 points compared to February, the index of current conditions was 2 points lower compared to the previous month and 25 points below the same period last year.

The Purdue survey also asked farmers about their thoughts on major investments and the reasons behind their decisions. The number of farmers expressing a poor outlook for farm profitability rose from 7% last fall to 22% this month. Michael Langemeyer, assistant director of the Center for Commercial Agriculture, noted that profitability projections are slightly lower than last year due to high input costs and higher interest rates. However, there are still concerns about potential fluctuations in fuel and labor costs as well as locking in high break-even prices.

Mintert highlighted high input costs as a major issue for farmers, stating that many inputs have already been purchased at locked-in prices. This can make it difficult for farmers to adjust their plans if market conditions change unexpectedly. Additionally, he noted that price cuts and uncertainty about farm profitability are significant concerns among farmers at present time.
