Dries van Agt, the former Dutch Prime Minister, and his wife Eugenie van Agt-Krekelberg passed away by euthanasia, according to a human rights organization founded by The Rights Forum. Both were 93 years old and will be laid to rest in a private ceremony in Nijmegen.
The organization stated that Van Agt died arm in arm with his beloved wife Eugenie van Agt-Kreckelberg, who had been his support and anchor for more than 70 years and whom he always referred to as ‘my girl’. Both had been in frail health for some time, with Van Agt suffering a brain haemorrhage in 2019 and never fully recovering. He is survived by three children.
The couple’s legacy as politicians will continue to be remembered for their contributions to Dutch politics, including Van Agt’s leadership as Prime Minister from 1981 to 1986. They were also known for their deep love and commitment to each other throughout their long marriage.
