Amazon Fresh is revolutionizing its grocery shopping experience with the introduction of smart Dash Carts. The retailer has recently updated its Fresh stores in Schaumburg and Oak Lawn, Illinois, as part of its efforts to create a superior shopping experience. According to a report by The Information, Amazon’s next-generation Fresh stores will not feature Just Walk Out technology, instead relying on Dash Carts for a seamless checkout experience.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassi acknowledged that the company’s investment in food retailing has faced challenges due to external circumstances but expressed optimism about the improvement of the Amazon Fresh operation. He mentioned ongoing experiments with selection, billing formats, assortment and pricing, highlighting several promising results.

Tony Hoggett, Amazon SVP of grocery stores, revealed that the new line of Fresh stores will not use Just Walk Out technology. Existing Amazon Fresh locations will also be updated to “version two” stores without the technology. Instead, the retailer will implement Dash Carts – smart shopping carts equipped with scanners and screens, allowing customers to check out while shopping. Dash Carts enhance the shopping experience by facilitating easier navigation, discovering new items and finding the best deals.

According to reports, Amazon will continue to use the Just Walk Out technology in a limited number of Fresh stores in the UK and some Amazon Go stores. Seattle-based Amazon is a major player in grocery retail and is ranked No. 2 on The PG 100, Progressive Grocer’s 2023 list of the top food and consumer goods retailers in North America. Austin-based Whole Foods was named one of the PG Retailers of the Century alongside Amazon for its exceptional performance in grocery retailing over many years.
