From National Titles to International Stages: Trey Augustin Joins USA Hockey World Championships Team

The University of Michigan men’s hockey team will be representing USA Hockey at the upcoming World Championships. Trey Augustin, a 19-year-old goaltender from South Lyon and a product of the USA Hockey Development Program, was added to the roster on Sunday, replacing Detroit forward Dylan Larkin due to injury.

Augustin has had an impressive career at Michigan State University (MSU) this season, where he started as a freshman and helped lead the Spartans to their first-ever championship and first national tournament appearance since 2012. In 35 games, Augustin posted three shutouts, a .915 save percentage and a 2.96 goals-against average, earning him second-team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman honors. He also won the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player and his team was named the Most Valuable Player award.

Prior to playing at MSU, Augustin spent two full seasons with Team USA, supporting the national team to a gold medal at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Tournament. Last season for MSU, he quickly became a fan favorite during the Spartans’ best season in more than a decade. He had several standout performances throughout the season, including recording an assist in the NCAA Tournament against Western Michigan and making 60-of-64 saves in a win over No. 1 Wisconsin.

It’s now time for Augustin to step up his game as he prepares to represent his country May 10-26 in Ostrava and Prague, Czech Republic at the World Championships. This is a significant accolade for him as he goes from winning Division I national titles to representing his country on an international stage.
