In the service sector, 46% of scientists and engineers are women, while in manufacturing, only 22% are women. However, Latvia stands out as one of the leaders among EU member states in terms of the share of women employed in science and technology. This includes occupations involved in the systematic creation, improvement, dissemination and application of scientific and technological knowledge, as well as other related occupations such as technicians or related professionals.

In 2022, the highest share of women employed in scientific and technological occupations was recorded in Lithuania, the French region of Corse and Latvia. In contrast, the regions with the lowest proportion of women employed in science and technology were recorded in the Italian region Nord-Ovest, Malta, and the Italian region Sud. The data was released to coincide with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which is celebrated on February 11.
