On Monday, the British Deputy Prime Minister confirmed to MPs in the House of Commons that systems belonging to the British Electoral Commission and private devices of several parliamentarians had been hacked. The cybercriminals responsible for these attacks are believed to be working on behalf of the Chinese government, according to the National Cyber Security Center.

Meanwhile, the US Department of Justice has revealed more details about cyberattacks that targeted various sectors in the country. The same hackers targeted the White House, judicial, commercial and financial sectors as well as several members of Congress from both parties.

The New Zealand government also reported an attack on its parliamentary server linked to state-sponsored cyber activity by China. All three governments reported attacks that occurred in 2021 and 2022.

A public indictment by the US Department of Justice identified a hacking group responsible for these attacks as “APT 31”, operating out of Wuhan, China. The group is linked to China’s Ministry of National Security and has targeted critics of the Communist Party as well as stealing trade secrets.

Hackers primarily used phishing emails to gain access to their victims’ personal information, passwords and even Internet routers. Political decision-makers were specifically targeted in all three countries due to their involvement in committees dealing with China. This raises concerns about cybersecurity and protection of sensitive information among politicians across different countries.

The Chinese government has condemned sanctions imposed by both US and UK, denying any interference in its internal affairs. However, tensions between countries continue to grow due to this incident.

In conclusion, it is clear that these attacks were orchestrated by state-sponsored entities with malicious intentions towards political leaders and institutions across different countries. It is crucial for governments around the world to prioritize cybersecurity measures and take necessary actions against such threats before they cause any further damage or compromise sensitive information.
