Gov. Gordon Files Lawsuit Against Biden Admin’s New Fuel Economy Standards: Is the One-Size-Fits-All Approach Right for Wyoming?

Wyoming has filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration’s new fuel economy standards, which will require light vehicles to average 50 miles per gallon by 2031. The rules are intended to save on fuel costs and reduce pollution, according to the US Department of Transportation. However, Gov. Mark Gordon believes the standards are not appropriate for Wyoming because of long-distance travel and extreme cold conditions. He argues that electric vehicles may not be the best option for the country, where most people drive trucks and may have to haul livestock.

Gordon believes the new rule is a federal mandate to push consumers toward electric vehicles, which may not be practical for Wyoming residents. The governor, along with 16 other governors, called on President Biden to reconsider his electric vehicle ambitions. Gordon points out that the new rules, which also require charging stations every 50 miles, don’t take into account the realities of driving in Wyoming, especially the remote nature of the state’s roads.

Despite Wyoming’s involvement in multiple lawsuits against federal agencies, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recognizes the state’s unique circumstances and is working to find solutions that take into account Wyoming’s unique challenges. He emphasizes the need for a tailored approach rather than a one-size-fits-all solution. Buttigieg acknowledges that electric vehicles may not be suitable for all areas and is committed to ensuring that rural communities have access to affordable and reliable transportation options.
