On March 26, 2021, Ismail Haniya, the head of the Politburo of the terrorist organization Hamas, and Ziyad al-Nahal, the Secretary General of Islamic Jihad visited Tehran. The two delegations were received by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ismail Haniya was born in 1963 in the Shaata Palestinian refugee camp in Gaza. He graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza with a degree in Arabic literature in 1987 and joined the new Islamic Resistance Movement (HAMAS) soon after. In 1992, he was deported to South Lebanon by Israeli authorities but returned to Gaza a year later and began working at the Islamic University. Haniya was one of Sheikh Ahmad Yassin’s closest aides and managed his office until Yassin’s assassination in 2004. He then became head of the Hamas government in Gaza before being elected as its new leader in May 2017. In August 2021, his term as head of the Hamas Politburo was extended for another four years.

Ziyad al-Nahal was born in Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza Strip, and joined Islamic Jihad after being released from prison on life imprisonment charges for terrorism attacks against Israelis as part of the “Jibril deal” exchange deal with Israel. He formed Al-Quds Brigade military wing under Fathi Shakaki’s leadership during first intifada and became deputy secretary general of Islamic Jihad before becoming its current leader on September 28th ,replacing Ramadan Shalah who is seriously ill . He is considered one of most dangerous terrorists wanted by US authorities and has been rewarded with $5 million for information leading to his arrest; his accounts have also been frozen by American authorities.
