Harvard basketball guard Malik Mack, who has been an integral part of the team’s success this season, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to a source familiar with the situation. While getting on the portal doesn’t guarantee that Mack will leave Harvard, there have been rumors for months that he might seek a program at a major conference that supports NIL payments.

If Mack decides to leave Harvard, it could have a significant impact on the team as he has been one of their key players this season. Mack had an impressive first season at Harvard, averaging 17.2 points, 4 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. His performance ranked him third in the nation in points per game among freshmen. He was recently named Ivy League Rookie of the Year after earning Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors eight times during the season. In addition, Mack was named to the Lou Henson Midseason Watch List in January.

However, Harvard’s season ended prematurely after finishing fifth in the Ivy League, just missing out on a spot in Ivy Madness and a chance to compete for a March Madness qualifying bid. If Mack decides to leave Harvard, it could be challenging for the team to replace his contributions and maintain their level of play.

Mack received offers from other universities before choosing Harvard and cited his relationship with head coach Tommy Amaker as a major factor in his decision. However, if he were to leave now, it could lead to questions about Harvard’s stance on NIL compensation for student-athletes like Mack. It is unclear whether Harvard would support NIL payments or not if Mack were to transfer out of their program.

In addition to Mack, another member of the team who entered the transfer portal was forward Justice Ayogbor as a graduate transfer in March. Ayogbor averaged 8.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.9 blocks in 20 games this season.

Harvard’s upcoming season may face challenges with potential losses like those of key players like Mack and Ayogbor.
