The Sea Grant Consortium of New Jersey recently recognized top high school researchers at the Southersey Science and Humanities Symposium. The event, held at Naval Air Station Lakehurst and hosted by Ocean County College, encourages exploration and experimentation in science, engineering and mathematics among high school students. Students are celebrated for their outstanding achievements through presentations on their individual scientific research projects.
At this year’s symposium, Michael Danko, marine recreation agent for the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium and a member of the NJSJSHS executive board, presented awards for Best Environmental Paper and Outstanding Environmental Poster. Maja Abdelaal from the Maritime Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES) received the Best Environmental Paper Award for her work estimating the amount of airborne bacteria in sea foam aerosol. Anthony Bilotti from MATES was awarded Best Environmental Poster for his project developing an IOS application to determine appropriate size of a marine species to catch.
The overall winner of NJSJSHS is Shloka Shriram from Princeton High School who will present her research on novel quantum materials for low-power electronics at the 62nd National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. This event underscores the commitment and hard work of high school students in scientific research and experimentation.
