In Bad Schandau, Saxony, a group of four carnival dancers paraded with their faces and hands painted black, wigs of curly hair and bright red, oversized lips, in African-looking dresses. However, this display was not meant to be funny; it was seen as pure racism. The group of four were part of around 400 carnival participants in Saxony who paraded through Bad Schandau on Saturday, attracting attention for their scandalous behavior.

The small-town carnival has a history of attracting negative attention. Last year they featured Rainbow Man in the torture scene while Vinetu danced at the “asylum ranch”. In 2020, a carnival float featured a severed papier-mache head of Greta Thunberg. This year they had fun doing Blackfacing, where white people put black paint on their faces.

According to the Anti-Racism Foundation, Blackfacing is considered racist because it treats black identities and experiences as a costume. Carnival participants also wore traditional African dresses, gold jewelry, afro wigs and featured black cartoon people on posters and in their costumes, including an outdated chocolate kiss packaging print when they were still called “black kisses.”

The group of fools also left plenty of room for interpretation with their portrait of German politician Analene Berbock, where masked rats next to her left a message that read: “Analena dreams of a green life, but only rats stick to her glue.” pot.” Carnival attendees appear to have a pattern of controversial and offensive behavior, and their latest actions have sparked outrage and condemnation as they continue to engage in racially insensitive displays.
