Indian weightlifter Bindjarani Devi made history by winning a bronze medal at the 2024 IVF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand. Competing in the non-Olympic women’s 55 kg category, she lifted a total of 196 kg (83 kg jerk + 113 kg throw) and finished in third place. Although this was not enough to win gold, it was still a remarkable achievement for Devi, who had previously won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a lift of 203kg.

In the jerking category, Devi struggled with her first attempt at 83 kg but eventually succeeded on her second try. However, she missed her next attempt at 86 kg. In the clean and jerk segment, she lifted 110kg and 113kg in her first two attempts but missed her final attempt at 119kg. Despite this setback, Devi still excelled in the throw category, winning a silver medal.

Mirabai Chanu was the only other Indian athlete to compete in the IVF World Cup and finished 12th overall. The prestigious event is set to conclude on April 11th and will showcase the incredible talent and determination of weightlifters from around the world. With their impressive performances at this tournament, both Devi and Chanu are well on their way to securing Olympic berths for India in the future.
