Indigenous-Led Wave Energy Project in British Columbia Promises to Reclaim Land and Build Community: The Yukuot Initiative

The California-based CalWave has been chosen as the technology provider for a wave energy project in Yukuot, British Columbia (BC) in partnership with the Movacaht/Muchalaht First Nation (MMFN). This project is an Indigenous-led initiative that aims to harness North Pacific waves to achieve energy self-sufficiency. The project is backed by funding from TD Bank Group and Natural Resources Canada’s Clean Energy Rural and Remote Communities Program.

MMFN’s focus on reclaiming their land and building their community has led to this innovative project. The goal of the project is to serve as a model for similar initiatives along the North American Pacific coast and globally. Currently, the project is in the feasibility and design phase, gathering information that will help MMFN make decisions about its full implementation.

Azar Kamran, Executive Director of MMFN, expressed his vision for Yukuot as a center of innovation in community building and clean energy development. With its rich history as a trading hub, Yukuot is now set to become a center of excellence once again, setting examples for sustainable practice and technological innovation.
