On the second day of a meeting in the United States, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant discussed issues of military cooperation and strengthening Israel’s air capabilities with Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin. During their conversation, Gallant also met with CIA Director William J. Burns, who participated in the Israeli-Hamas talks in Doha last week. Friction between the two allies due to pressure from the White House has strained bilateral relations, as Washington calls on Israel to reduce the intensity of its offensive on Gaza to minimize civilian suffering.

However, Austin emphasized that Israel has the right to defend itself and that the US will always support it because the bilateral bond between the two countries is “unbreakable.” The urgent relief of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains a priority, and Gallant and Austin discussed threats to Israel and ways to address them, including destroying Hamas and securing the release of hostages. The Israeli Defense Minister’s meeting with his American counterpart followed Netanyahu’s criticism of the United States for abstaining from voting in the UN Security Council.

Gallant also met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan during his visit to Washington. The relationship between Israel and the United States is being tested, but both sides remain committed to working together to solve the challenges they face. Despite some tension between them, their character remains “unbreakable,” as Austin stated after his meeting with Galant yesterday.
