Joe Lieberman: A Pioneering Orthodox Jew who Defended Israel, Failed to Win Vice President and Then Served as Senator for 13 Years

Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, a pioneering Orthodox Jew, passed away on March 27 at the age of 82 in New York. The Washington Post reported his death, citing complications from a fall, according to his family.

In 2000, Lieberman made history by becoming the first Orthodox Jew to serve in the US Senate. He later ran for vice president alongside Al Gore but lost to George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Netanyahu paid tribute to Lieberman in a blog post, praising him as an honest and courageous public servant who defended the Jewish people and the Jewish state. The prime minister remembered Lieberman for his moral compass, common sense, and unwavering commitment to truth. He also highlighted Lieberman’s gentle nature and loyalty as a friend.
