John Bertie had a standout season with the Miami Marlins in 2023, contributing to their unexpected playoff run. He was considered an above average player at both shortstop and third base based on stats like above average strikeouts and runs defended. His .294 batting average, .344 on-base percentage and .405 slugging percentage gave him a career-best 103 OPS+.

Recently, the Yankees acquired Bertie from the Marlins as they addressed DJ LeMahieu’s injury absence. The move involved a three-team deal that included the Yankees sending shortstop Jon Cruz to the Marlins and catcher Ben Rortvedt to the Tampa Bay Rays. In return, the Yankees received John Bertie, while the Rays received top prospect Shane Sasaki.

With his experience at five different positions, including most of his time at shortstop and third base, Bertie is expected to primarily play third base for the Yankees, who previously held that position with LeMahieu. Anthony Volpe will be at shortstop, Gleyber Torres at second base and Anthony Rizzo at first base. While Osvaldo Cabrera was initially considered for third base, he will likely serve as a backup. The Yankees already have a strong lineup with players such as Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Alec Verdugo and Trent Grisham in left field.
