In 2021, Caleb Malek, a 23-year-old resident of Red Wing, tragically lost his life after testing positive for fentanyl, Percocet and THC at his sober living home. Despite seeking detox treatment at Zumbro Valley Health Center, Malek’s death was ultimately caused by the negligence of the Rochester Health Center.

According to court records, jurors found Rochester Health Center liable for its failure to follow policy and adequately screen Malek upon admission. It was also alleged that Zumbro Valley failed to train its staff to recognize signs of breathing problems, which may have contributed to Malek’s untimely death.

Red Wing’s mother, Jill Adams, filed a lawsuit against Zumbro Valley Health Center following her son’s death in 2021. On March 22, 2024, the jury found in favor of Adams and awarded her $1.5 million in damages. The case has sparked controversy surrounding the standards of care and treatment provided by Zumbro Valley Health Center.
