Amazon has decided to eliminate its “Just Walk Out” technology from its Fresh stores across the United States due to a number of concerns with the self-checkout system. The technology, which uses cameras, sensors and human supervision to enable customers to shop without interacting with a cashier, was designed to revolutionize the shopping experience.

The Just Walk Out system relied on a network of cameras and sensors to track customers throughout the store, monitoring their purchases and allowing them to simply grab items and leave without stopping at the checkout counter. However, despite its high-tech nature, it still required significant human involvement, with reports indicating that over 1,000 people in India were tasked with scanning camera feeds to ensure customers were checking out correctly.

In addition, legal issues have also been challenging for Amazon. A class-action lawsuit in New York accused the company of collecting biometric identifier information without proper disclosure to consumers. This violation of the state’s Biometric Identifier Information Act required a reevaluation of the technology and its application in stores.

Finally, Amazon has decided to remove the Just Walk Out technology from its Fresh stores due to various challenges faced during implementation. The decision comes as a result of these issues and indicates that a more traditional payment approach may be necessary for now.
