At the 62nd Annual Player of the Year Competition in New Ulm, KNUJ announced its 2023-2024 Winter Athletes of the Year. Out of the 44 nominees, three athletes stood out for their outstanding performances.

Ryan Holmgren from St. Peter was named KNUJ’s basketball player of the year for her exceptional play in the Class AAA state tournament and impressive averages of 21.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game.

Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Area’s Nick Slater received Wrestler of the Year honors for his contributions to his team’s success at the team state tournament and second-place finish at the individual state tournament in the 189-pound weight class, with a record of 47-6 at season’s end.

Colton Benson from New Ulm received his second KNUJ Boys Basketball Player of the Year award for his remarkable performance during his career with averages of 27.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game, finishing with an impressive total of 2,207 points.

In addition to recognizing individual award winners, KNUJ honored five state tournament teams at the event: New Ulm boys hockey team, LCVMA wrestling team, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart girls basketball team, St. Peter and Mountain Lake girls basketball team Area/Comfrei Boys Basketball Team.
