This year marks the fifth anniversary of the Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy (LSE) initiative, and we are thrilled to continue expanding our work and impact. With over 20 firms in the initiative, we have collectively committed over $26 million in pro bono support to sustainability issues in 2023, including $2 million from Arnold & Porter and Oriko, $6 million from Wilson Sonsini, and $7 million from Morrison & Foerster.

One of our recent additions has been Startup Love: Sustainability, an experiential education class at Stanford Law School that supports early-stage non-profit and for-profit startups addressing climate, sustainability, and social challenges. Through this program, we provide free legal aid and support to help these startups succeed.

In addition to Startup Law: Sustainability, LSE has also worked on many exciting projects this year with firms in the initiative. We’ve helped entities focused on sustainable aquaculture and agriculture, coral reef restoration, renewable energy generation, green finance, and carbon capture technologies. Our work continues to make a meaningful impact on these important sustainability issues.

Furthermore, with the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Advocates for a Sustainable Economy initiative worked closely with advocates in the initiative to offer webinars and direct pro bono services to startups and tribal entities on how to take advantage of IRA incentives and accelerate the implementation of renewables energy sources. This work highlights our commitment to promoting sustainability initiatives that benefit both businesses and communities alike.
