The Blue Economy initiative has been implemented in Lebanon as part of the SwitchMed II activities, with UNEP partnering with the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development. This collaboration will focus on promoting sustainable practices and policies that will benefit the economy while protecting the environment.

The conference “National Conference on Blue Economy” is set to take place on May 2 in Beirut, Lebanon, under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment. It aims to present the findings of the National Blue Economy Assessment and endorse policy recommendations, with a focus on fisheries, coastal tourism and port activities. The event brings together high-level political and technical experts to discuss ways to transition to a circular, more environmentally resilient and prosperous blue economy in Lebanon.

The conference hopes to create momentum for sustainable development by facilitating partnerships and collaboration between key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, as well as academic institutions and civil society. The importance of coastal cities and local communities in promoting sustainable practices will also be highlighted during this event. Saida will be showcased as an example of how local actions can contribute to long-term sustainability goals. Afterwards, field activities will be conducted in Saida along with a validation process for the Local Blue Economy Action Plan across the city. This highlights the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement and multi-level governance in achieving sustainability goals.
