A small business has opened in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and it is the second of its kind in the state. Sweaty Glass, owned by Shane Spikeard, specializes in the art of glassblowing.
Pickard’s passion for glassblowing began when he attended the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee. He fell in love with the art form and has been fine-tuning his creations since 2019. Now he has transformed the garage into his own glass factory where he creates glass glasses, vases and other decorations using molten glass. Spickard also holds classes for those interested in learning the art of glassblowing.
The process of creating these glass pieces is intricate and fascinating. Spickard heats the glass, adds glass frit to create the design, and molds the shape using a variety of tools. He even uses wet newspaper to shape the glass, and blows air through a blower to help inflate and shape the vase. After the glass is smoothed with a torch, the piece is placed in the oven for 12 hours.
Sweaty Glass is located at 144 W 10th Avenue in Bowling Green and offers classes for anyone interested in learning the art of glassblowing
