The auction for Lionel Messi’s shirts from the 2022 World Cup is set to take place at La Bombonera Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Six shirts worn by Messi during the tournament are up for sale, and the collection is expected to fetch a price of over $10 million. The highest bid on any game-worn sports memorabilia currently holds Michael Jordan’s jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals, which sold for $10.1 million last year.
Sotheby’s will be conducting the auction and bidding on Messi’s shirts will be open from November 30th to December 14th. The public is invited to view the collection during a public exhibition that coincides with the auction. Proceeds from the sale will go towards supporting the UNICAS project, which helps children suffering from rare diseases. One of Messi’s shirts is particularly prized – it was worn during his first half in Qatar – but all six are expected to attract high bids.
