Mets Send Starting Pitcher Tyler McGill to Triple-A in Search of Bullpen Help: Opportunity for Growth

As reported by MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, the Mets have assigned starting pitcher Tyler McGill to Triple-A Syracuse following their 9-6 loss to the Astros on Saturday. The move aims to fill Megill’s spot with a reliever as the team faces a depleted bullpen until Edwin Diaz returns from suspension. The Mets have two options to start in place of McGill in the next rotation: Christian Scott or Jose Buto.

McGill pitched 5.1 innings in Saturday’s game, allowing four earned runs on five hits and three walks. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza commented on Magill’s performance, noting that he showed potential with good speed and splits, but struggled against the Astros’ strong lineup. Mendoza acknowledged the team’s inability to finish the game effectively.

In his eight starts this season, McGill holds a 2-4 record with a 5.08 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. Despite showing promise at times, McGill’s inconsistent performance led to his assignment to Triple-A. The Mets hope to address their needs by moving the pitching staff and exploring different rotation options.

Mendoza also mentioned that he is open to bringing in other prospects who could help improve the team’s pitching depth such as Frank Francisco or Trevor Williams who have been performing well in Double-A Binghamton.

The move comes after several struggles for McGill this season, including giving up multiple runs in many innings pitched, making it hard for him to keep up with his opponents.

With this decision, the Mets are taking steps towards improving their bullpen and finding better options for their rotation before Edwin Diaz returns from suspension.

The move of Tyler McGill may seem like a demotion for some players but it is an opportunity for them to learn more about themselves and improve as players, they will gain valuable experience at Triple-A level before they can be ready for Major League Baseball.
