The Be Well Institute, a new initiative by UT Health San Antonio, is focused on addressing substance use and related disorders. This comprehensive center will utilize research and evidence-based treatments to tackle addiction and related issues. Acting President Robert A. Chromas believes that the institute will lead a transformational change in addressing these problems at the national and state level.

According to Texas Health Data from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Becker County is among the top three counties for drug-related deaths in 2022. In response to these alarming statistics, the Be Well Institute aims to provide a compassionate and transformative environment for individuals with substance abuse disorders. Through innovative research and local engagement, they hope to reduce stigma and support patient recovery. The institute is supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Clinical Trials Network and receives federal funding.

The treatments offered by the Be Well Institute include psychological therapies, social and peer support, lifestyle counseling, community outreach and educational initiatives. Founding director Jennifer Potter said the institute’s launch marks a new era of collaborative research. Stakeholders from the academic, health and public sectors are encouraged to join this vital effort to improve the lives of individuals and communities affected by substance use disorders. Gabriella Alcorta-Solorio, a health reporting intern for Texas Public Radio, works with Texas News on Community Health through Texas State University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the university’s Translational Health Research Center.
