A small local business in west Houston, Shawarma Land, was robbed just hours after opening, the Houston Police Department reported. The owners of Shawarma Land on Westheimer said a thief damaged their property and made off with more than $1,000 from the register. Owner Mohammad Asaad expressed his disappointment, stating that he had saved every penny for the restaurant.

Despite the setback, Asaad remains resilient and optimistic. He chose the bustling area for his restaurant because of its diverse customer base. He said opening Shawarma Land was a long-held dream, as he spent a lot of time perfecting the recipes and renovating the space.

The neighborhood where Shawarma Land is located has seen a number of burglaries in the past year, according to the ABC13 Neighborhood Safety Tracker. Upon entering, the thief quickly grabbed the cash register and ran out the back, leaving the broken glass behind. Assad was shocked by the incident, although he was aware that robberies were not uncommon in the area.

Houston police are actively investigating the burglary, but no arrests have been made yet. For the latest updates on this story, follow Alek Bozarjian on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
