The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) has recently joined the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), a nonprofit consortium of 126 colleges and universities in North America that focuses on research and training in Earth system science. By becoming a member of UCAR, UCSC gains access to over 30 professional development opportunities, including internships with leading scientists, fellowships for emerging Earth system scientists, and even the potential for a career at the National Center for Atmospheric Research – a modeling center of excellence involved in climate change research.

UCAR membership aligns with UCSC’s strategic plan for addressing climate change, sustainability and resilience, as well as its goal of inspiring diverse students to pursue careers in science. Associate Professors Claudia Beaulieu of the Department of Ocean Sciences and Nicole Feldl of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences led the membership application process with assistance from the Ocean Sciences and Applied Mathematics departments.

Beaulieu emphasized the importance of UCSC joining UCAR, highlighting the university’s impactful research and education activities in the Earth system sciences, including atmospheric science, climate science, hydrology, oceanography, biogeochemistry and solar physics. Feldl expressed enthusiasm for the discussions surrounding the predictability of the Earth system and emphasized the urgency of making credible predictions about future climate based on accurate observations. She also recognized UCAR’s role in promoting coordinated research efforts in climate science.
