Law enforcement agencies in the United States are increasing their efforts to assist people dealing with mental health issues. This week, a group of new police officers completed comprehensive training aimed at understanding and communicating effectively with individuals with mental health issues and disabilities.
Over 30 recruits from 10 different New York law enforcement agencies participated in the training, practicing responding to simulated calls for service using a statewide map program. This program provides rapid access to telehealth, connecting individuals in crisis with mental health resources through Internet-enabled tablets.
During the training, retired Sergeant Mark Taylor emphasized the importance of de-escalating situations through effective communication. The goal is to help individuals get on the road to recovery by providing them with the support they need, so that law enforcement does not have to constantly respond to crisis situations.
Statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Illness show that one in four Americans is clinically mentally ill, highlighting the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to better support individuals facing mental health challenges.
