Northern Illinois University (NIU) has been awarded a $158,531 Susan Harwood Federal Safety and Health Training Grant to enhance workplace safety and health training. This grant aims to provide mental health and suicide prevention training for employers and employees, with a focus on small businesses and hard-to-reach, at-risk construction and general industry workers.

The National Safety Education Center at Northern Illinois University is an educational center of the OSHA Training Institute, offering occupational safety and health training to workers, supervisors and employers in the public and private sectors. NIU’s Continuing and Professional Education offers non-credit, professional development and certification preparation courses, partnering with OSHA to provide training courses.

Training topics covered in the sessions will include recognizing, avoiding and preventing mental health stressors. The training courses will be conducted by John Newquist, OSHA Certified Field Trainer and will last from two to four hours. These sessions will be available in live, virtual and on-site delivery formats.
