Ontario Science Center’s sudden closure has left many in shock, as the union representing outside contractors reports that Levi Canada will lay off over 50 workers in the food industry. The province announced the closure due to structural issues with parts of the roof, which prompted an outcry from residents, science enthusiasts and even the architectural firm responsible for designing the building.
JP Hornick, president of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, criticized the government for trying to find excuses to close the historic Science Centre. Despite widespread support for it to remain open, the province previously announced plans to move it to a new location at Ontario Place currently under construction. There, it will be part of a larger entertainment complex featuring a spa, concert venue and marina.
However, discussions about its relocation continue amid ongoing restaurant layoffs. The closing of the Ontario Science Centre drew strong community reactions from those who love the building and desire to see it stay in its current location. It remains uncertain what the future holds for this beloved institution.
