OpenAI has delayed the launch of an advanced voice mode that incorporates the GPT-40 language model into the chatbot. The mode aims to offer a more natural conversation with “emotions and non-verbal cues”. The delay is necessary to ensure high standards of safety and reliability.
The GPT-40, introduced in May, enables more human-machine interaction by understanding text, audio and image inputs and quickly generating responses. The advanced “Voice Mode” feature allows users to personalize their interaction with the chatbot by choosing from a range of voices. However, the launch of this mode has been delayed due to the need for further improvements in content discovery and user experience.
OpenAI also plans to work on the infrastructure to support large-scale real-time use. The Voice Mode launch roadmap targets Fall for Plus subscription users, though this is subject to change.
